TOLW is open to teachers in all design-related disciplines: architecture, construction, engineering, interior design, landscape, and theater.

Faculty & Guest Speakers
Shaun Fillion
LC, LEED Green Associate, Educator IALD, CLCP
Shaun is a lighting designer and educator. He is the Lighting Design program director at NYSID and Director of Lighting Design at RAB Lighting. Fillion’s honors include the lES Distinguished Service Award, Illumination Awards, and the Princess Grace Award. A frequent speaker, he serves on the board of the Designers Lighting Forum and LEDucation, and chairs the lESNYC Student Lighting Competition.
Rebecca Hadley-Catter
LC, LEED AP
Rebecca managed the SOURCE Lighting Education Center for nearly 20 years, educating thousands annually through workshops and symposiums while overseeing a 36,000-square-foot customer experience center. As a former university professor, she brings expertise in adult learning, research on lighting for older adults, and curriculum development. She is Lighting Certified (LC), a LEED Accredited Professional, and an NCIDQ certified designer.
Leslie North
IALD, PE, LC, LEED AP
Leslie brings over 35 years of award-winning architectural lighting design experience to the classroom, blending technical expertise with artistic interpretation. Her diverse portfolio showcases streamlined functional and appropriate design thought. With a breadth of professional practice and industry leadership, she aims to equip students with the technical foundation and creative insight needed to excel in lighting design.
Mark Roush
FIES, LC, M.Arch
Mark is educated as an architect, specializing in lighting design and application. In 47 years in lighting, he has led marketing and developed education centers for prominent manufacturers and also served faculties of two universities. He has served as past president of the IALD Education Trust and the IES, while receiving the IES Fellow and Distinguished Service Award.
Erin Speck
LEED-AP BD+C, WELL-AP
Erin is an Assistant Professor with the Interior Architecture program at George Washington University. She teaches courses on Lighting, Sustainability and Human Well-being, Building Systems, Digital Drafting, and Professional Practice. Erin is a LEED-AP BD+C, WELL-AP, WELL Faculty, Fitwel Ambassador and NCIDQ certificate holder. She is a member of ASID, IES, and IDEC.
About the Workshop
It’s Intensive! Expect to spend 16 hours a day thinking, seeing, and communicating lighting! Working with the workshop’s experienced faculty, participants will develop their capabilities to teach lighting design and technology. There will be time dedicated for sharing successful learning strategies and teaching approaches.
Participants will work with materials from the IES Lighting Library and experience demonstrations that communicate the science and creative impact of lighting. The goal of the workshop is to help develop better lighting teachers. You can be that teacher.

Who Should Attend
We are looking for a maximum of 24 participants, who will engage with the workshop faculty of nationally recognized lighting educators. Participants are expected to have basic lighting knowledge and to have responsibility for lighting education.
Whether you are going to teach your first class in lighting or want to refine what you do, this workshop is designed for educators in all design-related disciplines: architecture, construction, engineering, interiors, landscape, and theater.
Workshop Cost
Participants are responsible for travel to and from the workshop, and a $695 commitment fee due upon acceptance. All other costs of instruction and materials are supported by grants from The Nuckolls Fund and program sponsors.
How to Apply
Applications must include the following:
- A letter stating – why you wish to attend – your faculty status, include tenure status – a statement of your lighting background – how will the experience affect the lighting program upon your return
- Your vitae
- A description of current lighting courses at your institution
- A letter from your department head or dean. The letter must indicate clearly the extent of your institution’s commitment to lighting education.
Attendees at previous workshops, who need a refresher are also eligible. The TOLW Committee will select the attendees.
