A new $50,000 award has been established by The Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education to honor Jeffrey A. Milham, a founder and its president for 30 years until his retirement earlier this year. Milham, who has had a distinguished career as a lighting designer, was a friend and colleague of the late James L. Nuckolls, lighting designer and educator.

Milham, with Lesley Wheel and other New York-based lighting designers, established The Nuckolls Fund in 1989. It is supported by gifts and donations from hundreds of lighting companies and individuals throughout the industry. This year’s distribution of $70,000 brought the total awarded over three decades of Milham’s leadership to $1,210,000. The Fund’s on-going objective is to expand college level lighting curricula with grants and awards to both instructors and outstanding students.

In announcing the creation of the Milham Catalyst Grant, Lee Waldron, the Fund’s new president, expressed the Fund’s Board of Directors wish to honor Milham’s years of personal dedication to the success of the Fund. “Jeffrey’s tireless commitment to the Fund over the past 30 years has led to a remarkable set of achievements that has spurred the growth of lighting education in North America,” Waldron stated.

“I am truly honored by the Fund in creating the Catalyst Grant in my name,” said Milham, FIALD, FIES, and DLFNY.

The Catalyst Grant’s goal is to support new innovative, viable and sustained synergies within a school’s curriculum, individually within an institution, or with lighting-related interdisciplinary programs, to further the development of lighting education in unique and challenging ways. A previous $50,000 grant was given in 2010 for the course, “Lighting Across the Design Curriculum,” a set of teaching modules with application to a range of design courses of study.

Applications for the Milham Catalyst Grant are due on November 22, 2019. Full details can be found on The Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education website, www.nuckollsfund.org.
